The Central Department Store on Jerozolimskie Avenue known for decades as Smyk is one of the icons of post-war Warsaw modernism. Designed in 1948 by Zbysław Ihnatowicz and Jerzy Romanski, the building underwent a major revitalisation led by the architectural practice AMC Andrzej M. Chołdzyński.
The commission was to document the building after the revitalisation for the practice’s portfolio. Post-war modernism is a photographic subject that rewards patience: the geometry of the facade, the rhythm of the windows, the relationship of the building to the street.
